	The following are the activities in brief performed by an optometrist :
Case History : A detailed case history is taken by an optometrist before the eye examination. A good case history includes the status of the general health, family history and known drug allergies. Refraction : following a detailed history the optometrist performs refraction, a test done to assess the eye for visual defects.
	Testing of the front of the eye : After refraction, examination of the front of the eye is performed. Diagnosis of eye diseases is an important aspect of optometric practice. Examination of the front of the eye is done using an instrument known as the slit-lamp biomicroscope.

	Testing of the back of the eye : After the examination of the front of the eye, fundus examination is performed. This is to assess the status of the back of the eye. It is performed using two different instruments known as the direct and indirect ophthalmoscope. Systemic diseases like diabetes and hyper tension can manisfest changes in the eye which are detected with the above tests.
	Color vision : is a test used to test the perception of colors. it is an important test to procure a driving licence. It is also a prerequisite for certain occupations. Eye pressure : recording of the eye pressure completes a detailed eye examination performed in day to day optometric practice.

Apart from day to day practice an optometrist also conducts special clinics.
I. Contact lens clinic
	Kerotometry : Kerotometry is the measurement of the curvature of the cornea which is the key requirement for the fitting of contact lenses. Fitting of contact lenses : Contact lens manufacturers across the world are bringing in new products every day to India. Expertise is required to dispense these lenses. A qualified optometrist is trained to fit all kinds of contact lenses.
II. Pediatric Clinic
	Pediatric : These are special clinics for children where assessment of the visual status is performed using objective methods. Cover test: This is a test used to check the malfunction of the eye muscles in cases of squint.
III. Public Health Optometry
	Eye Camps : Conducting and participating in eye camps organised in rural areas is an important activity of public health optometry. An optometrist plays a key role in being the first line of defence towards preventable blindness.

Training in optometry necessitates imparting of knowledge as well as clinical experience to the students. Such requirements can be ideally achieved by the college of optometry being associated with an eye hospital. The college will therefore be on the premises of the Lotus Eye Hospital in Juhu.
