| Minimum age of 17 years completed on 31st December of year of admission.
Students should complete standard XII Science with minimum 60% marks in Physics , Chemistry, Biology and or Mathematics and minimum 50% in English.
Entrance examination will be conducted in July. Admission will be strictly on merit and rights for admission will be reserved with the committee.
Admission Eligibility to the B.Optom Program for Holders of Diploma in Optometry
Minimum age of 19 years completed on 31st December of the year of admission.
Those, who have completed a Diploma in Optometry from a reputed institution are eligible to seek admission on lateral entry basis. Exemption on number of years will be based on transfer of credits decided by the University.
Those, who have completed Diplomna from a Polytechnic course will be required to have one additional year of work experience before they can be admitted to the third year.
Aims and objectives of the optometry course at the Lotus College of Optometry, Mumbai.
The four year Bachelor's course in optometry has the following aims and objectives.
- To prepare a cadre of optometrists as primary eye care professionals by institutional education and clinical training. They can independently practice the profession and science of optometry in an optometry clinic, optical establishment or an eye hospital along with other medical professionals including ophthalmic surgeons.
- To train optometry graduates who will be able to teach optometry at a school/college of optometry, take up further education and to research in ophthalmic field.
- To train optometrists to independently perform the tasks of routine clinical eye examination including refraction, to detect any pathological disorders of the eye and system.
- To train optometrists to independently prescribe all types of optical corrections including spectacles, contact lenses, low vision aids, vision therapy eye exercises.
- To be able to satisfy the needs of the ophthalmic industry as a whole.
The recommended course of teaching will lead to a basic degree in optometry and would be considered as the minimum essential for statutory registration of optometrists in countries, wherever Optometry has been brought under legislation.
The syllabus aims at preparing an optometrist, who can practice independently or take up employment with an eye establishment. An Optometrist may independently manage an optical establishment or assist an ophthalmologist.
The syllabus pattern recommended by the World Council of Optometry for a University level four year degree course of Bachelor in Optometry is shown. After careful study of the syllabus and teaching patterns presently followed at various schools of optometry in India, a modified syllabus pattern with a detailed infrastructure required for a new school of optometry is reported here.
The Birla Institute of Technology and Science has recognised the Elite School of Optometry course for their degree of B.Optom. The syllabus at the college of Optometry at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University , Pune has been recognised by its University. The syllabus at the Lotus College of Optometry Mumbai, has been formulated accordingly so that it is readily acceptable to any University in India.
